Writing That Will Elevate Your Mission

Good writing keeps your great work on the minds of your customers and donors

What’s the cost of poor communication?

Consumers have endless choices when it comes to buying a product, making a donation, or hiring a service. When you don’t share the incredible impact your organization makes, how will they know you’re the best at what you do and worthy of their investment? And if they do find you but your copy is full of typos, irrelevant details, or dated information, they’ll move on to your competitor before giving you a chance (or a dollar!).

At the same time, you and your team are focused on serving your clients as only you uniquely can - as you should be. You don’t have the bandwidth to write about what you’re doing while you’re out doing it! And let’s be honest...not everybody paid attention during the grammar units in English class.

When you partner with Katie Norton for your writing, editing, and communications strategy, you can be sure your community will be informed, inspired, and excited to invest in your efforts.

How can I help?

Writing.

Starting from scratch? I’ll get your point across in a concise and compelling way. Whether you need a greeting for an event program, new copy for your website, or a major gift proposal, you can trust me with it.

Editing.

Almost perfect…but not quite. I believe in the power of the red pen and I’ll make sure your voice comes through, but with better grammar. Send me what you’ve started and I’ll polish it up for you!

Strategy.

Maybe you know what you want to say, but you aren’t sure which platforms to use when. We’ll create a plan to ensure that your message gets to the right folks, in the right way, at the right time.

Hi, I’m Katie. I’ve been in your shoes.

I spent the first two decades of my career in government and nonprofit settings, where everyone did a little bit of everything…and not quite enough of anything.

Something urgent always seemed to be tugging at me and my colleagues: a grant report deadline, a staff meeting, a client tour, seating assignments for next week’s grand opening, an interview, a board presentation, last month’s expenses. I’m overwhelmed just thinking about it, and still kick myself sometimes over opportunities we missed because we weren’t getting the word out about our good work frequently or well enough.

I was always at my best as the first one in the office, classical music in my headphones, happily writing a compelling case for support or the CEO’s gala talking points before the whirlwind set in.

Finally, something clicked and I realized I could be that person all the time! So, I’m up early, my headphones are in, and I’m here to help. I know how it feels to have a cause to champion, constituents to cultivate, and a community to captivate - but to lack the time, knowledge, or just the words to get your story out there.

I’d love to join your team, and let you get back to work.

Get the word out in three easy steps.

Define the project.

Fill me in on what you need and we’ll agree on a timeline and budget.

Wait patiently.

I’ll get to work writing, editing, or creating your strategy and will deliver on time!

Toot your own horn.

Let your constituents know what you’ve been up to and how they can join you.

Why should you outsource your communications?

Writing is one of those things that nearly anybody can do, so why hire a freelance writer when you could just hand off a project to a colleague or intern? Partnering with a communications professional can help when…

  • You need to stay focused on delivering your mission. Whether you’re teaching virtual violin lessons, renovating basements, or raising money, your attention and expertise belongs there!

  • You tend to use insider lingo. You work on your speciality every day, so it’s no wonder you default to technical language when talking about your activities. An outsourced writer will keep your client’s perspective in mind and speak their language, while still proving your value.

  • You value your organization’s resources. A freelance writer will deliver a high-quality final product faster than an in-house pinch hitter, since fewer rounds of edits will be needed. And your team will stay focused on the work only they can do, delivering their best value to you. A freelancer helps you stay on time and on budget!
